Nile Swim Club to Receive State Historical Marker

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission approved the Nile Swim Club for the dedication of a state historical marker. There will be a ceremony dedicating the new marker on Saturday, May 22, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. More details will follow regarding the event soon.

Nile Swim Club was one of the earliest African American owned and operated swim clubs in the U.S. The story of its establishment is an important example of a marginalized group successfully working for equality. In the mid-20th century, Yeadon was a segregated community, but in 1957, three black men applied for membership in the newly opened Yeadon Swim Club. When they were denied, the black community worked together to raise the money to buy land and build a swimming club of their own.

Delaware County Vaccination Update

Phase1A now includes individuals 65 and older and those ages 16-64 with certain underlying medical conditions. The Chester County Health Department is updating its vaccine interest forms. They are available at chesco.org/covidvaccine
Anyone who previously submitted the form for Group1B and now qualifies for Group1A does NOT need to complete a new form. You will be notified when you are able to make an
appointment.
Please be patient as vaccine remains VERY limited. Vaccine supply has not increased for Pennsylvania The state is still receiving the same limited supply as it was in the beginning of January.
Delaware County will be opening a Vaccine Call Center next week. The call center will be staffed by people who can help to answer questions and assist those without access to a computer or an email.
As of Jan. 20, 14,605 COVID-19 vaccines were administered in Delaware County, which is the fourth-highest numbero of any county in the state, and Delaware County is the fifth most-populous county in the state. This number is closely aligned with the state average on a per capita basis.

Delaware County to Stream Participation in COVID-19 Memorial Service

Delaware County will participate in a national COVID-19 Memorial on Jan. 19. Delaware County Council will hold a tribute beginning at 5:15 p.m., which will be streamed live on the County’s website.

The ceremony serves as a time to remember those we have lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. Members of the community are invited to watch live and participate by lighting a candle in their window or inside of their home. Municipalities are invited to light up their government buildings that evening and churches are invited to ring bells at 5:30p.m.

Tragically, to date, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the death of over 387,000 Americans and we have lost 1,053 beloved Delaware County residents to the virus. These are our family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and members of our community.

During this pandemic, many family members and friends were not able to say goodbye to their loved ones due to public health concerns or travel restrictions, causing even more pain during an already difficult time of grieving.

In the midst of this deadly pandemic, where so many are grieving the loss of a family member, friend, neighbor, or coworker, it’s important that we pause and reflect, and remember each person we have lost. We hope this memorial will serve as a collective healing for our community.

The memorial will be live-streamed beginning at 5:15 p.m. at www.delcopa.gov and on County Council’s Facebook page.

Delaware County Vaccination Update

Phase 1B Now Includes Residents 65 and Older

Delaware County residents are urged to complete an interest survey for the COVID-19 vaccine. The County is currently administering COVID-19 vaccinations to people who live or work in Delaware County and are in the priority Phase 1A group. This group includes healthcare workers, EMS workers, residents and staff of long-term care facilities, and medical examiner and funeral staff.

Due to the limited supply of the vaccine, healthcare workers, EMS staff, long-term care facilities, and medical examiner and funeral staff are the priority for vaccination distribution. Delaware County is committed to ensuring a safe and timely distribution of the COVID-19 vaccination and continues to work with the County’s hospitals and the Chester County Health Department to administer the vaccine as quickly as possible. As of Jan. 15, 13,336 COVID-19 vaccines were administered in the county, which is a similar rate compared to neighboring counties.

The Chester County Health Department has updated its home page and vaccine webpage to include information and links for residents to learn more about the vaccine phases and to indicate interest in receiving a vaccine.

Alert: Detour on 500 Block of Church Lane Saturday, January 16

On Saturday, January 16, the 500 block of Church Lane will be closed to traffic.

Southbound traffic on Church Lane will be diverted to Penn Street and Holly Road whereas northbound traffic will be diverted to Baily Road and Bonsall Avenue.

The Police Department will permit local access to the businesses within the detour area to the maximum extent possible.

Delaware County Offering COVID-19 Testing in Darby Week of January 18

Delaware County will be conducting public drive-thru COVID-19 testing the week of January 18, 2021 at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby.

Testing will be available for insured and uninsured individuals 12 years of age or older who live or work in Delaware County and have COVID-19 symptoms, were exposed to COVID-19, or are considered critical/essential workers.

Individuals must pre-register at www.delcopa.gov/testing to receive a test.

If you have health insurance, please bring your insurance card to the test site. However, there are no out-of-pocket costs or co-pays for COVID-19 testing. Masks or face coverings must be worn.

Pennsylvania Allows Pharmacies To Administer COVID-19 Vaccine

Bolstering Fight To Stop The Virus

As part of the Wolf Administration’s effort to rollout the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, Governor Tom Wolf has approved a temporary waiver allowing pharmacists licensed by the Department of State to order and administer COVID-19 vaccines without a physician’s order when vaccines are available to the public. Adding pharmacists to the health care professionals administering COVID-19 vaccines expands options for Pennsylvanians to be immunized once the vaccine is widely available from the federal government.

“Pharmacists, as well as pharmacy interns and technicians, are critical partners in the commonwealth’s plan to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine,” Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar said. “Many Pennsylvanians will go to their local pharmacy for vaccination. This waiver will enable pharmacies to offer the COVID-19 vaccines without a physician’s order.”

Pennsylvania pharmacists who meet certain training and other requirements can obtain authorization to administer injectable medications, biologicals and immunizations. If a pharmacist has that authorization, he or she can administer any immunization, including COVID-19 immunizations, to persons 18 years of age or older.

Historically, some pharmacies have entered into arrangements with physicians in order to receive reimbursement for flu shots and other vaccinations. Many pharmacies, however, do not have an arrangement with a physician, and even those that do have not had time to incorporate the COVID-19 vaccination into that relationship. This waiver would allow pharmacists to order and administer COVID-19 vaccine without such a provider agreement

“We are working on ways to increase access to the vaccine, and pharmacists already play an important role in making sure Pennsylvanians are protected,” Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. “Pennsylvanians continue to play an essential role in preventing the spread of COVID-19 by masking up, washing up and socially distancing.”

Vaccination Update from Chester County Health Department

As of January 13, 2021, the Chester County Health Department (CCHD), as well as many other vaccine providers, continue to vaccinate individuals in Phase 1A.

The CCHD is aware of recent announcement by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services about a shift in populations included in Phase 1B, and all vaccine doses being approved for distribution to states. The department is assessing the impact of this announcement on its current approach for vaccinations and transition from Phase 1A to Phase 1B.

The transition to move to Phase 1B will take place as quickly as possible. Please continue to check the CCHD website for updates.

Chester County, through the Health Department, the hospitals and other healthcare providers, are actively receiving COVID-19 vaccine and administering it as quickly as possible to Phase 1A priority groups.

All healthcare personnel not affiliated with a hospital/health system, please complete the Healthcare Vaccine Interest Survey.

Phase 1B groups and individuals should complete the Vaccine Interest Survey to express your interest in the vaccination and receive notifications when appointments are available.

Once you complete the survey, you will see a confirmation page confirming it was submitted. You will not receive an email confirming the receipt of the survey. When appointments are available you will be emailed more information to schedule your appointment.

Vaccines are safe, effective, and a key strategy to protect you and the people around you from serious illness. We are currently experiencing a historical moment with the development of a COVID-19 vaccine.
