Police, Borough Officials Launch L.O.V.E. Community Garden in Yeadon Community Park

Two years ago, Yeadon Police Chief Anthony Paparo brought the Yeadon community together for a screening of the film Walking While Black : L.O.V.E. is the Answer. Following the screening, attendees and Officer Paparo took part in a candid conversation about police/community relations both locally and nationally.

What is L.O.V.E.? According to the L.O.V.E. Is The Answer Movement, it means putting these four steps into action: LEARN, OPEN, VOLUNTEER & EMPOWER.

As part of this endeavor, Chief Paparo wanted to create a community garden: The L.O.V.E. Garden, to be located in Yeadon Community Park. Paparo envisioned the garden as a place where “instead of us meeting at a 911 call, we talk about something else, while growing vegetables, flowers, and most of all, a better understanding of ourselves together.”

However, the COVID-19 pandemic put a hold on plans to launch the garden in 2020. Finally, a year later, the project is underway. On Monday, May 10, a groundbreaking for the garden finally took place — marking that start of what Paparo hopes will be several community gardens.

Science in the Summer

GSK Science in the Summer – “Be an Engineer” Program for Ages 7-13

The GSK Science in the Summer™ Be an Engineer program is offered virtually in Delaware County. Through online videos and at-home experiments, children take on the roles of different engineers to solve real-world problems. Children then join virtual research team meetings with Franklin Institute scientists and educators to share their results. Be an Engineer is designed for children ages 7-13, and we invite your whole family to explore together at home!

Families in the greater Philadelphia area may enter an online lottery from May 3 – May 21, 2021, to receive a free kit of science materials from their local library. Kits will include materials for the Environmental and Electrical Engineer activities. Additional online content is available for continued exploration with the Structural and Biomedical Engineer activities. Please note that if you are not selected in the lottery, all activity guides, materials lists, and videos will be shared online, so you can still assemble your own materials and have fun being engineers at home!

A Matter of Balance

Afraid of Falling? Join COSA on Zoom for ‘A Matter of Balance’ Virtual Program

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention findings indicate that:

  • Every 20 minutes an older adult in the U.S. dies from a fall.
  • Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injury.

Many people do not know that fear of falling can actually become a self-fulfilling prophecy, putting us at an increased risk for falls. The good news is that you can face your fears and learn what you can do to increase your physical strength, flexibility and balance and decrease your risk of falling by attending the program “A Matter of Balance.” The County of Delaware Office of Services for the Aging (COSA) is offering A Matter of Balance FREE of charge virtually on Zoom.

This nine-session evidence-based program proven to help reduce the risk of falls among older adults will be held twice a week for four-and-a-half weeks from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, May 5 through June 2.

Register by contacting Ellen Williams, Health and Wellness Program Manager at williamse@co.delaware.pa.us or by calling 610-499-1937. Space is limited.

What are others saying about A Matter of Balance?

“Now that I think about possible situations where I might be in danger of falling, I pre-plan a bit and also take care of my physical being as well, food, exercise, sleep, etc. Keep the program going. You have made us think about ways to help ourselves stay safe, healthy and balanced.”

“I made changes in my home. I would recommend the class to all my friends.”

Matter of Balance is free to PA residents age 60 and over and will be held virtually on Zoom.
