Flash Flood Warning: Monday July 6

National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning. Flash flooding conditions are imminent. For more info: www.weather.gov/phi/

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams…urban areas…highways…streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

A flash flood warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

Delaware County Declares Disaster Emergency in Response to Civil Disturbance

Delaware County Council Chairman Brian Zidek signed a Disaster Emergency Declaration on June 1 in response to civil disturbance, which has caused property damage and affected the safety, health and welfare of residents in Upper Darby Township and other municipalities in the county.

On May 31, some protests in response to the death of George Floyd devolved into civil disturbances in Upper Darby and other locations in the county. Businesses in Upper Darby suffered extensive property damage and additional law enforcement from neighboring municipalities and the National Guard were brought in to protect the safety of residents. Delaware County Council requested the National Guard over the weekend to assist Delaware County’s law enforcement. Over 600 Guardsmen have been placed on state active duty to provide support to local law enforcement.

The Emergency Declaration suspends certain County rules and regulations relating to limits on contracting and employment involving the emergency and will facilitate applications to the state government for emergency assistance from impacted businesses and residents.

The declaration will remain in effect until revoked in writing, or in seven days.

WHEREAS, protests and riots have erupted across the country in response to the recent death of George Floyd, a Black man in Minneapolis who died after one or more white police officers knelt on his neck, the latest in a long line of the deaths of Black men and women that have spurred protests across our nation; and

WHEREAS, peaceful demonstrations began and subsequently escalated, by some persons, to include actions of vandalism, property damage, rioting, and/or looting in Philadelphia, Montgomery, and Delaware Counties; and

WHEREAS, the Borough remains subject to a State and Borough Declaration of Emergency related to the 2019 novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19; and

WHEREAS, on this day, the imposition of a curfew became necessary to protect the Borough and its residents from severe endangerment and harm to their health, safety and property; and

NOW THEREFORE, this 1st day of June, pursuant to the relevant sections of the Emergency Management Code and the Pennsylvania Borough Code; I do hereby declare a state of emergency within the Borough of Yeadon.

As the Mayor of the Borough of Yeadon, I do hereby order a Borough wide curfew limiting the hours when persons may go upon or travel the public streets as follows (collectively “Curfew Hours”):
From June 1, 2020 at 9:00 p.m. until June 2, 2020 at 5:00 a.m. and continuing each day until further Order.

FURTHER, During these Curfew Hours only persons that must leave their home to work at essential businesses, or to seek medical attention or the assistance of law enforcement and must go upon or travel the public streets to do so shall be permitted upon such public streets in the Borough of Yeadon.

FURTHER, his Order shall remain in effect until June 6, 2020 unless rescinded, superseded, or amended by further Order. Failure to comply with this Order shall result in orders to disburse, and the imposition of penalties, fines, other remedies as provided for by law.

FURTHER, I authorize the Yeadon Borough Police Department to enforce this Emergency Proclamation.

STILL FURTHER, this EMERGENCY PROCLAMATION shall be in full force and effect for seven (7) days unless extended by Council.

Event Updates Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

The Camp Garrett Open House scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 has been postponed.

Additionally, the Darby Creek Valley Association‘s annual Spring Cleanup has been postponed.

As noted previously, the Borough of Yeadon will be closed for normal business and for non-essential personnel (as determined by the borough manager), except for Police and Fire departments. Only essential employees are to report for duty. All other activities such as weddings, funerals, paying of tickets or citations and ordinary resident commerce within the borough has been temporarily suspended. Police and Fire activity will continue. If you encounter any emergency (as you would before), please call 911.

State of Emergency Proclamation in Yeadon Borough Due to COVID-19

The Governor has called a State of Emergency for at least two weeks that will close all Pennsylvania Public Schools (Parochial Schools have followed), as well as all non-essential businesses. Employers are asked to encourage employees who can, to telecommute/work from home, while practicing social distancing. For applicable school students, grab and go meals will be available at Evans Elementary in Yeadon, as well as Penn Wood Middle School in Darby between the hours of 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Additional information can be obtained via the WPSD website.

In addition, the County has also instituted specific State of Emergency instructions for Delaware County. Each Delco Mayor is to provide a proclamation for their respective municipality. Consequently, the Borough of Yeadon is following suit. Therefore, for the next two weeks, as Mayor, the following proclamation is hereby in effect:

In a further effort to maintain Social Distancing to slow down the spread of the disease, all gatherings of 50 or more people is hereby prohibited until further notice. This includes parties, concerts, weddings, funerals, places of worship, all business establishments and the like, that constitutes 50 or more people. This proclamation will be strictly enforced by Yeadon Police.

Coronavirus Update: Pennsylvania Schools Closed

All PA Schools Closed for Two Weeks

Governor Tom Wolf announced that all K-12 Pennsylvania schools will be closed for 10 business days effective Monday, March 16. The Wolf Administration will continue to monitor COVID-19 in the commonwealth, and at the end of 10 days will reevaluate and decide whether continued closure is needed.
