Youth Services Coordinator/Youth Services Librarian

Full time plus full benefits

The Youth Services Coordinator works under the direction and supervision of the Library Director, providing quality programs, collection development, reference and outreach to the community, in a professional and courteous manner. A flexible schedule requiring evenings and weekend hours is required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating and running the programs for the youth services. This includes planning and presenting engaging and age-appropriate summer learning programming, as well as an after- school program.
  • Responsible for public relations and marketing duties relating to youth programming.
  • Responsible for the department budget.
  • Supervise and coordinate Teen Advisory Board Programs and meetings.
  • Develops guidelines and standards for youth programming.
  • Works with community groups, schools, day cares, parents, teachers, etc. to keep them informed of services available to youth and to work cooperatively on projects of mutual interest or benefit. Cultivate and maintain partnerships with local schools, childcare providers, and other youth- related organizations to promote reading and digital literacy.
    — Play a role in library’s community engagement efforts.
    — Identify library and literacy outreach opportunities and develop appropriate response. ➢ Stays informed of activities and services for children and families within the community.
  • Maintain an awareness of trends and developments in youth services, issues affecting children, and general library services. This includes actively pursuing self-development in library services and programming for children and youth; staying current with emerging technologies and how they relate to trends in youth programming (e.g. coding, Minecraft, STEAM, etc.) and libraries in general.
  • Recommends books, periodicals and other materials for youth collections.
    — Build and sustain a high-quality, appealing children’s collection; selects new materials for the juvenile collection with the support of professional and popular review sources, as well as publisher’s catalogs; maintain and develop the library’s collection of toys and digital games.
    — Stay current with children’s and young adult literature by reading widely and keeping up with current trends in library services to children and teens.
  • Participates in local, state or national organizations for youth service, such as but not limited to Pennsylvania Library Association and American Library Association.
    — Attends conferences, workshops, and reads professional literature to stay informed on issues related to children’s library services and creative learning activities, active use of Internet resources. Keeps informed on trends in library services and professional organizations.
  • Participates in other library activities and perform other duties as assigned by the Director.

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Knowledge and skills to develop and conduct STEM/STEAM programming OR eagerness to learn.
  • Knowledge of children’s literature.
  • Experience presenting literacy-based and creative learning programs to children and families.
  • Previous working experience with children, preferably in an early education or elementary education environment, is essential. Experience with tweens and/or teens is a plus.
  • Highly motivated and detail oriented.
  • Thorough knowledge of trends relating to youth service.
  • Regular and dependable personal attendance and punctuality are essential for demonstrating leadership and accomplishing library goals.
  • Current driver’s license. 

Note: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. The incumbent may be required to perform other related duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of the library.

Essential Physical Requirements:

• Generally, the employee must be able to lift 30 pounds from ground level to waist level and be able to push/pull cards weighing up to 120 pounds.

All library positions require the following clearances:

  • Report of criminal history from the Pennsylvania State Police.
  • Child Abuse History Clearances from the PA Department of Human Services.
  • Fingerprint- based federal criminal history submitted through the FBI.

Experience and Training Requirements:

  • ALA-accredited MLIS or equivalent degree preferred, but not required, with at least 1 year of library experience.

Compensation and Benefits:

Full time salary between $33-$36,000 depending on education, and experience. Benefits include health insurance (100% employer paid), vacation days, 3 personal days; sick leave, 10 holidays; continuing education opportunities.

Job Posting: Yeadon Public Library Director

The Board of Trustees of the Yeadon Public Library seeks a dynamic community minded Library Director for our very active library located in a diverse community in Delaware County, PA.

The Director will possess a master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited

institution. The Director will have PA State Library Certification or eligibility to acquire same within 6 months, and a minimum of 2 years of supervisory and administrative experience in a public library or commensurate experience that demonstrates ability to address the features of this position including:

• High level of managerial and organizational skills along with the capacity to coordinate staff development, to work effectively with experienced, long-term staff, and to hire new staff as needed.

• Ability to exercise considerable professional skill, initiative, and independent judgment.

• Innovative thinking and knowledge of current and emerging technologies.

• Competence to develop, implement, market, and evaluate a multitude of programs and services addressing all age levels within a diverse community; and to manage collection development through timely materials selection and weeding.

• Proven capacity to work with various borough stakeholders (e.g., Library Board, Delaware County Libraries, Friends of Yeadon Public Library, William Penn School District, local, county and state governments).

• Commitment and ability to engage in community outreach and partnerships.

• Working knowledge of library financial systems and reporting.

• Exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication.

• Strong grant research and writing skills.

• Ability to assess the adequacy of existing and long-range plans for library building expansion and development.

• Planning and community needs assessment skills.
