Heat Advisory In Effect: Stay Hydrated, Cool, and Keep Safe

A Heat Advisory is in effect through Saturday. Today through Saturday temperatures are expected to be in the 90s with the heat index making it feel close to 100 degrees.

Delaware County reminds residents to stay hydrated with non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated drinks such as water, juice, and sports drinks; wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing; and find shaded areas to get relief if you are outside for extended periods of time.

Please check in on elderly loved ones and neighbors and those at risk. Remember to not leave pets outside for long periods of time or in the car.

A 24-hour Emergency Heat Information Line is now active through the summer. Delaware County residents can call 610-872-1558. The information line will provide weekly heat safety tips and reminders, emergency information, and locations where people can seek relief from the heat.

Cooling fans are available for older residents in need. Please contact COSA at 610-490-1300.

View the Delaware County Heat Plan, which details tips and resources.

National Ice Cream Day Celebration at Mt. Moriah Cemetery Sunday, July 18

Mount Moriah Historic Cemetery & Arboretum is celebrating National Ice Cream Day by honoring one of their more famous burials, Lewis Dubois Bassett.

Bassett, a Quaker school teacher and farmer, began making Bassetts Ice Cream in 1861. In 1885, he moved the operations from his New Jersey backyard to a storefront at 5th and Market Streets in Philadelphia. In 1892, Bassetts moved the store to the new Reading Terminal Market where the still family-owned company maintains a store to this day.

The Friends of Mount Moriah and Bassetts Ice Cream invite the public to attend Sunday, July 18, 2021, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. At 2 pm, Alex Bassett Strange, Vice-President, Distribution, will give a short talk about the history of Bassetts Ice Cream. The first 200 visitors will receive a free Bassetts Ice Cream Sandwich!

Bassetts is a 5th generation family business and is America’s oldest ice cream company.

Lewis D. Bassett and other family members are buried at historic Mount Moriah Cemetery & Arboretum, Section 204, Lot 5, 6201 Kingsessing Avenue, Philadelphia.
